What Are Semi-Permanent Tattoos Made Of? Ingredients Explained

Most people who buy semi-permanent tattoos do not think much about what is in them — they look good in the photos, they fade on their own, done. But if you have sensitive skin, allergies, or you are buying for a child or teenager, knowing what is actually in the product matters.

Here is an honest explanation of what semi-permanent tattoo products contain and what to look for.

How the Ink Works

Inkup tattoos use an organic ink technology that penetrates the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of dead skin cells  to create a tattoo-like appearance. The ink is not a surface-level sticker. It is not a dye that colours the skin the way henna does. It sits within the dead cell layer and fades as those cells naturally shed over 7 to 15 days.

The key distinction from real tattoo ink is depth. Real tattoo ink is injected by a needle through the epidermis into the dermis  the living, permanent layer of skin. That is why real tattoos are permanent. Inkup's ink never reaches the dermis.

What Is in Inkup's Ink?

Inkup uses dermatologically tested, skin-safe organic ink formulations. The specific formulation is proprietary, but the key things to know:

No PPD (Paraphenylenediamine). PPD is a chemical found in some temporary and semi-permanent tattoo products, particularly black henna products, that causes severe allergic reactions in some people. Reactions can include blistering, scarring, and in serious cases, systemic allergic response. Inkup products do not use PPD.

No heavy metals. Cheap tattoo inks sometimes use pigments based on heavy metals — chromium, cobalt, nickel, mercury compounds. These are not appropriate for skin contact. Inkup's formulations avoid heavy metal pigments.

Organic pigments. The colour comes from organic pigment compounds rather than metallic or synthetic dyes.

Carrier components. The ink needs a carrier medium to transfer from the substrate to the skin. These are standard cosmetic-grade ingredients — similar to what you find in skin-contact cosmetics and patches.

What the Substrate (Backing Sheet) Contains

The tattoo is printed on a substrate — the layer that holds the ink until it transfers to skin. Inkup uses food-grade or cosmetic-grade substrate materials. The backing is not consumed and is removed after application.

Is It the Same as Henna?

No. Henna (mehendi) works by dyeing the skin with a plant-derived pigment (lawsone) that binds to the keratin in skin cells. The colour develops over a few hours and fades over 1 to 3 weeks as the dyed cells shed.

Inkup's technology is different — it is an ink transfer rather than a dye reaction, and it produces a sharper, more tattoo-like result than traditional henna. The colour also stays closer to the original design rather than shifting through shades as henna does.

Black henna is a separate product entirely — it often contains PPD and is not the same as natural brown henna. Inkup products are not henna of any kind.

Patch Testing

Even with safe formulations, individual skin reactions are unpredictable. If you have known sensitivities to cosmetics, adhesives, or hair dye, do a patch test before full application:

  1. Apply a small piece of the tattoo on the inner wrist or behind the ear
  2. Leave it in place for 24 hours
  3. If no redness, itching, or swelling appears, proceed with normal application
  4. If you notice any reaction, remove with oil and do not use the product

For Sensitive Skin and Children

Inkup's adult products are tested for adult skin. Teenagers can use them without issue in most cases. For children under 8, we recommend the patch test and parental supervision during application. Very young children (under 3) have thinner skin barriers  adult semi-permanent tattoo products are not recommended for this age group.

If you have active eczema, psoriasis, or any skin condition involving broken or inflamed skin, do not apply on affected areas.

Where to Buy
